Roberto Clemente
No. 21, Roberto Clemente

49 Years Without El Cometa de Puerto Rico

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
This December 31, 2021, marks the 49th anniversary of the great Roberto Clemente's plane crash on a mercy mission flight he chartered to Nicaragua.

Roberto Clemente was the 11th player, among a total of 32 (to date) in major league baseball history to reach the magic 3,000 hit plateau. His 3,000th hit on September 31, 1972, was his last. Not by design but by fate. Just three months after that 3,000th hit (a double to left field at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh against New York Mets lefty Jon Matlack, who was the NL Rookie of the Year that same season) Clemente died when the plane he chartered with friends crashed soon after take-off from Puerto Rico.

The plane was loaded with aid to the people of Managua, Nicaragua, which had suffered a terrible earthquake of 6.3 magnitude and killed and injured thousands just a week earlier.

Roberto’s best baseball friend was his Pittsburgh Pirates teammate, catcher Manny Sanguíllen, who told me during an exclusive telephone interview (published in Sports Radio Service last year) he could have easily joined Roberto on that fateful flight, but for reasons he could not control, never did.

During his 1955 rookie season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto wore No. 13, but when center fielder Earl Smith parted ways with the team, Clemente took No.21 which had been used by Smith. Today number 21 is one of the most famous numbers ever used by a player during a stellar Hall of Fame career. Just as all players (especially black players) love to wear No. 42 during Jackie Robinson Day, over 30% of Hispanic players in MLB are very proud to wear No. 21 on Roberto Clemente Day.

Although he played for 18 years, was selected to 15 All-Star games, won four batting titles, 12 Gold Glove awards, won the National League MVP Award, and the World Series award, the press never gave him the credit he deserved.

Clemente had 3,000 hits at the time of his death and a .317 combined batting average, but he was black and Puerto Rican so the racist media had “two strikes” on him, since his debut in the Major Leagues. Some in the media called him Bobby, which he hated. He always said “My name is Roberto and that is how I want to be called.” He was a very proud man.

During his last season in 1972, in a visit to San Francisco to play the Giants at Candlestick Park, I witnessed a Pittsburgh writer shout in the press box after Clemente struck out, the following: “Send him back in a banana boat!”

Imagine all the verbal abuse this man had to withstand to play baseball, one if not the most difficult of games. Baseball is one (if not the most) difficult team sports to master.

Most baseball fans love to see a player hit a ball 450 feet over the fence. I am proud to say that I saw Roberto Clemente play, and hit and drive in runs, and play defense like nobody else. His instinct was acute and seldom did he have to dive for a ball in the outfield; he knew how to play the outfield.

His arm and accuracy on his throws were legendary. Many superstars of that era like Willie Mays, Stan Musial (just to mention a few) have statues erected in the cities/ballparks where they played, but Roberto Clemente is in a class by himself. He has a statue at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and a bridge named after him, the Roberto Clemente Bridge, also known as the Sixth Street Bridge, over the Allegheny River in the Steel City. He also has statues in the South Bronx, New York, a city with the largest population of Puerto Ricans, as well as a statue at the entrance of Ciudad Deportiva Stadium in Carolina, Puerto Rico, the city where he was born.

We at the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum are very proud to have Roberto Clemente among our greats enshrined forever. He was a great man. Among our numerous exhibits and displays for over two decades, Roberto is still the most popular Latino player and fans are always inquisitive about Roberto Clemente’s history and especially the way he left us, helping people that he didn’t know in a country that was not his own. I like to end with a baseball quote as we remember the Cometa de Puerto Rico.

There are many, many baseball quotes about Roberto Clemente, but my favorite is by a gentleman, in my humble opinion, the best play-by-play baseball broadcaster who ever lived, who said: “Roberto Clemente could field the ball in New York and throw out a guy in Pennsylvania.” – Vin Scully, of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Felíz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo.

"MLB Sure Has Balls!" Reader Reaction
My reaction to the recent article on MLB's use of two different baseballs can be summarized with one common acronym: WTF?

Nice job to raise awareness of another hot button issue. Who knew MLB switched baseballs at this level? Perhaps you could do a TV show or publication such as Judicial Watch only under the guise of Sports Watch

Now that MLB has embraced In-Game Wagering, the two-baseballs issue, coupled with the lack of transparency by MLB, paints a scenario possibly more sinister than may be the case. Thank you, Watergate -- "The coverup is worse than the crime."

Either way, the "Insider Information" factor cannot be swept under the synthetic carpet when "pros" can find out which baseballs are used in specific games, while 'regular' fans can't believe ANY information MLB may release.

To put it in fables' metaphors so it can be explained to the future fan base (as in children), an owner may be the greedy farmer ready to slaughter the goose who laid the golden egg, or the fox in charge of the hen house.

With the San Francisco 49ers' convincing 31-13 win over the visiting Atlanta Falcons (6-8) on Sunday at Levi's Stadium, their playoff chances improved dramatically to 88%. Standout offensive players were everywhere, including George Kittle (six receptions on six targets, good for 93 yards); returning wide receiver and running back Deebo Samuel (29 rushing yards and one touchdown along with 60 receiving yards on four receptions); running back Jeff Wilson Jr. (110 rushing yards); and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (18 of 23 for 235 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions). Another big playoff step could happen Thursday evening when the Niners (8-6) travel to Nashville to meet the Tennessee Titans (9-5).

Split-screen commercials are now in vogue

Just a FEW Complaints...
By Howard Pearlstein

Got my car back yesterday, smog passed and DVR'd the Celtics game and when I got around to it, the usual pre-game guys and then NO Warriors -- fast forwarded thru the whole couple of hours, some auto racing BS -- I KNOW it's tough and demanding and needs razor sharp pinpoint reaction time BUT auto racing isn't a sport. It's a competition. The only sport that involves getting in a car was way back in the 50s and 60s when there were drive-in movies and it was a will-she
won't-she game.

Self-promotional garbage about upcoming shows is always irritating but the one that really teed me off the most was during the Pacers' game. Neck-and-neck all the way and in the fourth quarter, tied at 98(?), they half-screened the foul shots for a LAZY-Boy commercial so you could only see the shooter but not the other players, so you couldn't get a feel from the faces and body language where they
were at.

Deplorable...

I guess I should try to live up to the spirit of the season and make an effort to forgive people who are greedy, stupid and rude, because they always give me something to complain about, which, obviously, is something I enjoy.

Okay, admit it, you immediately had a flashback to Immanuel Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics. Well, I'm glad somebody did because for me it was just a pretentious way to hook you into this article, and future series, on college sports west of Oklahoma, Alabama and other states where sports factories have a monopoly on coverage. Candidly, and with a sense of embarrassment, my knowledge of our own teams runs about as deep as does my knowledge of Kant, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. Yes, I've been "shamed," to use current jargon.
Home of the Pac-12, Mountain West, WCC, Big Sky, Big West

Now that I have your attention, I must first give credit to Sports Today! for my immersion into the WCC, Mountain West, Big Sky, Big West, and others, through its wide coverage of the expanse of California and other college athletics. Of course, this includes the Big Time action of Stanford, California and the Pac 12 in general. Most NorCal fans are familiar with Saint Mary's basketball, Bill Russell and other USF legends, the Zags, San Jose State, BYU quarterbacks (ahem!), and the rivalries and countless stars, male and female, who have achieved greatness at the next levels. We hope to take awareness of our teams up a notch, such as Santa Clara's women's soccer team which achieved national prominence and received unique Sports Today! coverage. The Ultimate Sports Guide/Sports Today! will give our tough, talented West Coast athletes the exposure they deserve as part of our mission!

We take pride in our strong relationships with sports information directors in NorCal and beyond, and depend on their outreach and professionalism to help us keep all our readers, local and national, engaged and informed. We will also include news of Division III schools from other parts of the country, where great schools take their sports seriously but whose triumphs get trampled in media landscapes where the titans dominate.

Stay tuned and please share your thoughts, team news and ideas with us at: theultimatesportsguide@gmail.com.

High-Performing Teams:
Lessons from the Sports World

According to basketball legend Michael Jordan, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” Without organization-wide teamwork, leadership, and trust, sustaining a championship level of performance—in sports or business—is highly unlikely. How do leaders of the most successful sports franchises overcome the hurdles of free agency, arcane rules, injuries, egos, salary battles, operational challenges, and the human element? How can these lessons be effectively applied to every type of business?

In this course, we will look at how sports organizations achieve smooth and superior transitions from year to year, especially after the rigors of championship seasons. Difference makers in the world of sports, including team executives, general managers, athletic directors, coaches, media observers, and athletes, will discuss the elements necessary to create and maintain elite-performing organizations, and reveal how a prevailing commonality among all of them includes a powerful culture. Students will leave the course able to apply broad relevant concepts to their challenges, such as alignment of goals, adherence to culture, and pervasive interactive communication, as well as numerous operational pearls of wisdom
from guest experts.

Francisco Liriano

Pitcher Francisco Liriano won the Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2010 with Minnesota (AL) and in 2013 with the Pittsburgh Pirates (NL).

Liriano signed with the San Francisco Giants as an international free agent in 2000. After the 2003 season, the Giants traded him to the Minnesota Twins, along with pitchers Joe Nathan and Boof Bonser, in exchange for catcher A. J. Pierzynski.

Buster Posey is the only player in the history of the award to
also be named the MVP in the same season he won his first Comeback Player of the Year (2012).

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
